PONY HAY
We grow our hay in traditional small meadows, where the different species of plants are high. This is good as the hay is a mixture of different plant fibre structures, taking more effort and energy to digest than rye grass based hay. Such hay is ideal for native pony types and ‘good doer’s who may be prone to laminitus, or carrying extra weight.
Our meadow hay is the result of decades of hay making on our farm, allowing us to develop a very natural, diverse and altogether enjoyable feed, perfect for the cheekiest of ponies not requiring high energy.
If you are seeking hay that offers greater energy, for horses in competitive work for example, we can supply a hay with a greater mix of rye grass, harvested from our fields adjacent to the river Brue.
For our small bale hay we reprocess the bales from larger round bales. While it does take more time to process, it provides a number of benefits to equines.
- We are able to bring the hay in faster off our fields, reducing the risk of damp or rain damage to the hay.
- By unrolling the hay and rebaling it into smaller bales any dust content is reduced to a minimum, which is good for the horse and the human.
- We process much of our hay to order, ensuring it is in the best condition when needed.
FEED VALUE
No two hay bales are the same, as are no two fields. This is due to the very nature of the land, how it is managed and its surrounding environment. The grass species and flora vary from field to field. Our knowledge of pasture fed livestock and their nutritional needs enables us to understand the varying feed and energy value from our hay, and help you create the right ration for your equines.
NATURAL & TRADITIONAL
Hay from our fields on the Somerset Levels, grown as naturally as possible on permanent herb rich pastures, without using sprays or chemical fertilisers.
Our hay is harvested into round bales to ensure quick collection from field. The hay is then chopped to smaller stalk lengths and re-baled into small bales, perfect for cheeky ponies. Any dust tends to drop out during this handling process, reducing any dust levels to a minimum.
NOT JUST FOR PONIES
We supply to farms and small holders too. We have farmed livestock on our farm for many years, feeding our hay and forage successfully to our stock. We regularly provide hay and straw to livestock keepers. We are equiped to load large trailers.
